Alinean and Wipro Launch Windows Mobile Messaging TCO ToolResearch and Tool Demonstrate Windows Mobile TCO 20-28% Lower than Competitors Seattle, WA – Windows Mobile Partner Summit 2007, December 11, 2007 - Alinean, Inc., the leading expert on IT Business Value Selling solutions, today announced the availability of the Windows Mobile Messaging TCO Tool, an online calculator developed to analyze the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of competing mobile solutions. Developed in partnership with Wipro, the analysis tool is based on research of mobile deployments by 160 customers, and a comparative lab-based study to determine the TCO of the leading mobile platforms for e-mail messaging and collaboration. The tool was introduced today at the Windows Mobile Partner Summit 2007. The Alinean Windows Mobile Messaging TCO Tool is the first research-based tool to allow IT executives and solution providers to quantify the advantages and true cost of ownership for competing mobile platforms. “Because each company scenario and installation is unique, it is important that users be able to scrutinize and customize the analysis,” said Tom Pisello, CEO and founder of Alinean. “This tool allows complete personalization.” Based on the Wipro TCO research and Alinean tool, Windows Mobile showed clear advantages as the lower cost platform, some 20-28% less expensive than RIM BlackBerry solutions. “Since the first studies in 1986 with Gartner, TCO analysis methodology has helped thousands of IT decision makers make better informed value-based economic choices,” said Bill Kirwin, ex-Gartner research VP, renowned TCO expert and Alinean advisory board member. “Analyzing mobile platforms using this methodology is more important than ever as deployments are made to an ever-increasing number of users, to assure that manageability costs do not grow out of control, and reduce costs to deliver true business value.” The cost of owning each mobile solution is analyzed from initial acquisition through sustained operations and support. The tool considers cost of ownership for equivalently functional platforms, capabilities and performance across the following dimensions: Infrastructure acquisition Infrastructure setup IT support Data center server administration Help desk Infrastructure software maintenance User phone/data plans Technical support “In our independent studies we used customer case studies and interviews, combined with detailed lab analysis of installations, resulting in a clear lifecycle cost advantage of Windows Mobile over similar RIM solutions, to show an average savings of over $100 per user per year,” said Bill Barna, principal consultant at Wipro’s Product Strategy and Architecture (PSA) team. The research and tool results indicate: Lower TCO: The TCO of the Windows Mobile platform is 20%-28% lower than that of an equivalent RIM BlackBerry platform over a three-year period. Fewer Infrastructure Components: There is a significant difference in fixed cost between the Windows Mobile and the RIM BlackBerry environments due to the additional infrastructure required for the BES Servers, SQL Servers and additional Exchange 2003 backend servers. Lower Support Costs: The infrastructure necessary for the RIM BlackBerry environment requires additional IT support and management effort. Tighter Integration with Exchange Server 2003: Windows Mobile MSFP takes advantage of Exchange Server 2003’s mobile support technology providing IT administrators a single environment to manage. Larger Application Selection: Numerous 3rd Party application vendors and a familiar .Net development environment provide Windows Mobile MSFP customers with a wide variety of choices when expanding the mobile platform to support line-of-business applications. “We are very pleased to introduce this research-based analysis tool for our customers and partners worldwide, to credibly quantify the competitive advantages of Windows Mobile,” said Steve Hegenderfer, Windows Mobile Solution Delivery Group Manager, Microsoft Corp.
